Upright pianos are the most common pianos in Melbourne homes, from compact modern models to tall Edwardian uprights and heavy pianolas. They look easier to move than a grand, and in some ways they are, but their height and weight catch a lot of people out.
How heavy is an upright piano?
Most modern uprights weigh between 200kg and 250kg. Taller older uprights, especially those with full iron frames, often weigh more, and pianolas or player pianos can weigh 300kg or more because of their roll mechanism and bellows.
Why uprights tip
An upright carries its weight high, in the iron frame and tall case. Tilt it too far and the weight moves suddenly. That is why uprights are moved strapped to a trolley, tilted as little as possible, and never walked on their own casters.
Moving an upright, step by step
- Close and lock the lid and fallboard, and remove anything sitting on top
- Measure doors, halls and stairs along the route
- Wrap the piano in padded blankets and secure them
- With at least two people, tilt the piano just enough to slide a padded trolley underneath
- Strap the piano to the trolley
- Roll it along the route, using ramps for steps and kerbs
- Load it upright into the truck and strap it to the wall
- At the other end, reverse the process and place it level
Uprights and stairs
Stairs are where uprights become a serious job. Even a few front steps need ramps or a controlled lift, and a full flight needs a stair plan and usually three movers. See moving a piano up stairs for how that works.
Where to put it
Place the upright against an inside wall if you can, away from windows, heaters and air conditioning. Leave a small gap behind it so the sound can breathe. Then let it settle for a few weeks before tuning.
When to call a professional
If the move involves stairs, a truck, a pianola, or an instrument you care about, a specialist crew is the safer and usually cheaper option once the risks are counted. Learn more about our upright piano and pianola moving.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How many people does it take to move an upright piano?
At least two on flat ground, and usually three for stairs or heavier uprights and pianolas.
Can an upright piano be laid on its back?
It is best kept upright. Laying it down puts stress on the case and action and makes it harder to control.
How much does it cost to move an upright piano?
It depends mainly on stairs, access and distance. Our cost guide explains each factor.
